Oh, Canada! | Ontario and the cottage - part 1

Oh, Canada!

Mark and I took a nice little babymoon up north to visit his family (many of whom I haven't met) and spend some quality relaxation time! We worked out a deal with my parents so they were able to join in on the fun as well and I think I can speak for everyone when I say we all had a great time!

We started our trip on a Wednesday after work and took an evening flight straight to Toronto. We flew American Airlines and the flight was SO uncomfortable for this prego. We landed around 11pm Toronto time (they are 1 hour ahead of Texas time) and picked up our rental car to head to the hotel nearby.

Here's the thing about international travel - it's much more complex than staying in the US! We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon and I'm so glad we didn't have to deal with all of the minutiae that comes with international travel because that would have been a beating! I ended up purchasing the $30 international plan from AT&T because we needed to be able to text or call relatives as well as have access to maps as we were driving around Ontario. Well, I was paranoid that I was going to go over my 120mb of data on the first night so we didn't use my phone and its map to get us to the hotel. Instead, we relied on Toronto's horrible signage (how do you even get around in Toronto?!) and it took about 45 minutes for us to get to our hotel about 10km from the airport.

We got a few hours of sleep and were up early the next morning. Mark has family all over Ontario and we had planned to see those on the east side later in the week, so we headed west to Kitchener (about 100km outside of Toronto) to visit with those that lived out that way. I was nervous when making plans because we scheduled this 'visiting day' on a weekday when many people were at work, but so many of them changed their plans so they could meet up with us and I'm so glad!

We went to Mark's grandma's (Oma) apartment in Kitchener and spent a good 4 hours visiting with this Canadian crew (plus Veronica who had to leave a little early):

Kelly, Brayden, Oma, and Melissa (bottom)

I had only met 3 of the family members in that picture before! We had a great time and it was so good to see some of Mark's family. We left with full bellies and some super sweet Canadian gifts for baby B. It was so good to see them all!

We left Kitchener around 2pm and headed back toward Toronto to meet my parents. They had flown in with us but went to visit Niagara Falls while we met with family. We dropped off our rental car, jumped into theirs, and headed east toward Belleville!

Mark's cousins Stacie and Trevor are pretty much the nicest people ever (they're Canadian so that's kind of a given) and were the reason we were able to visit Canada. They ever so graciously offered up their cottage on lake Kennebec for our stay and we so gladly accepted! We planned to get to Belleville around 6pm and then head up to the cabin after dinner but after a long day of travel we decided to stay at their home in Belleville for the night. We are glad we did because we got more quality time with cousins and got to celebrate Trevor's birthday with them!

Stacie and Trevor have an awesome home (currently on the market because they bought a house built in the 1890's!) with an even more awesome basement. I really thought I was on an episode of Love it or List it because this basement was SO Canada! After our dinner of Swiss Chalet (weird, but yum!), Cameron challenged Mark to some foosball and then we watched some Canadian football. It was such a good night catching up and getting to know the family more (that we don't see enough!)

We got up Friday morning and headed to the cottage. Stacie said it was a hot summer day with temps in the 70's! The Texans were loving it in our pants and long sleeves!

The cottage is about an hour north of Belleville and we arrived around lunchtime to this gorgeous view:

The view, the cabin, and the accommodations as a whole were pure HEAVEN. We made our lunch and quickly settled in on the back porch overlooking the lake.

Mark was feeling adventurous and set out in the kayak after a few hours of relaxation. I would have joined him but we were afraid I wouldn't fit with my big belly!

He set off for the island right across from our cottage and my mom had fun watching him get out of the kayak and explore the island.

The water got nice and still and we enjoyed an evening watching the sun set and feeling the temperatures drop!

The cooler temps called for a fire!

The next day was overcast and 70 degrees, the perfect day for a canoe outing! After a hot breakfast we got ready to head out to the open water.

Mark chose to kayak while I took the middle 'seat' (on the floor) of the canoe with my parents. They made a little pad for me to get comfy on and it was pretty darn cozy.

I got yelled at for turning around to take a picture of my dad when I rocked the boat so the best I could do was this selfie!

That's the cottage across the lake!

The land across from the cottage was all 'crown land', which we took to mean that it was a nature preserve. It was fun peeking up into the trees and looking for moose and bear but we had no luck.

After a quick trip and lots of laughs (and splashes) we were back to dry land to do more of what the weekend called for: reading, sleeping, and whatever else we wanted to do! Mark was working on some Canadian crosswords here:

I took along The Girl on the Train and finished it! I'm not a huge reader (unlike the rest of my family) so this felt like an accomplishment and I really enjoyed relaxing with a book!

That afternoon, the 'gamers' went inside and played a game of Crokinole (I had to google the spelling). It was a fun game but I was horrible at it so I let my mom take the lead.

Mark still beat the snot out of her. ;)

The two amigos stuck together and later went outside to fish. Mark was blown away by my mom's 'hidden skill' when she caught this fish in about 10 seconds!

She went on to catch 3 more fish in the first 10 or so minutes. Mark said he had no idea what he was doing and it was my mom that showed him how to bait the hook and then take the fish off the hook. Too funny!

Mark's first (and only) fish!

fishing lake kennebec

That night, we grilled steaks and enjoyed the water lilies as a centerpiece that Mark picked for me on his kayak trip. He's so sweet!

We finished the night with more games. First up was Sequence...

...and then the ultimate game of Scrabble!

I didn't come in last, so that's all that matters. Plus I made this combo which is pretty much everything that's important to me in life right now:

sweets and naps, all day every day!

That's just the first few days of our trip! Check back later this week for the end of our trip which includes more family, boating, and a day exploring in Toronto.

a festive fourth weekend

It was a red, white, and blue weekend full of fun, laughs, and Texas living!

We had Friday off and the bump and I celebrated with some festive (comfy) attire and ran some errands!

Friday night I had a hankering for pie so my sweet husband obliged and we took the fast lane to Emporium Pies to get my fix. As usual, it was DELISH!

On the way home, we stopped by the chapel where Mark and I got married over two years ago on November 10th. Back to where it all started!

Things sure have changed since that day...

Saturday (July 4th) was kicked off with a yummy breakfast, some relaxing, and then we went to my parent's house to swim and eat homemade ice cream. Up next was our yearly trek to my sister's in-laws home to eat (there is always a TON of food) and shoot off fireworks!

The spread was good as usual:

It was a great three day weekend and I love the feeling of summer! It's a big week on wonderfully made so be sure to check back each day for some fun pictures and news!

Linking up with B loved Boston, Life of Meg, and A Cute Angle.

Independence Day deals and DIY

I'm a little later than usual, but I do have a couple REALLY good favorites!

I made it JUST in time this year to get my festive 4th of July wreath decorated and hung. I have this burlap wreath I made a few years ago (which could probably use a tune-up) and I just use ribbon laying around to dress it up for each season. I had the star printed ribbon around it last year but this year I took it off and used it as the bow and did red around the perimeter instead. I wish I had a few American flags to stick in there but I don't have any laying around and that's not really in the budget this year (babies are expensive).

Speaking of not being in the budget...

I saw a friend post this top on instagram this morning and I LOVED it. I instantly looked it up and almost clicked 'purchase' but I didn't. It's not because of lack of love, though. Mark is lucky I'm 7 months pregnant (we're in the under two month countdown, y'all!) because budget aside, I want ALL of these - but I know I won't be able to wear them for a while. Even at an extra 20% off (ughhh!!!) I can't justify it. Someone just order them all so I don't have to look at them anymore, ok?

how pretty is the blue?!

black is ALWAYS a good idea.

That's my short and sweet post today. Anthropologie has a TON of cute things right now but I can't even bear to look because the temptation is too strong. Make sure you snag something good for me!

Happy Independence Day!

snippets from the land up north

This is just a teaser so I can promise you that the good pictures are coming! I've got the 300 I took narrowed down and ready to share next week.

But first - here are some snaps I took on my phone over our six day trip to Canada:

I caught mom studying the safety instruction guide on the plane. Like, literally, studying it. My dad (ever the jokester) had to pull out his card so they could match. #nerds

We caught this fiery sunset on the way into Canada.

We're here! We arrived at our hotel at about midnight on Wednesday night and turned around bright and early at 7am for breakfast and the trip west to visit family. Here we go!

We had to drive about 3 hours east of Toronto to get to the cottage so a stop at McDonald's for a snack (and in hopes of finding a Dr. Pepper - failed) was essential. They had an odd international menu (to be expected) and we had fun laughing at the McLobster and maple bacon poutine. Mark had the nanaimo sundae after talking about it all day (he said you could barely taste the nanaimo).

We arrived in small town Belleville on Thursday night and decided to spend the night there before heading to the cottage. It was Trevor's birthday so we even got cake!

Mark and Cameron went head to head in foosball in their AWESOME basement. It felt like an episode of Love It or List It!

Dad and I made the first (of many) stops at Tim Horton's on Friday morning. I had a sprinkle donut as well as some timbits as recommended. I'm pretty sure my dad had 3 Tim Horton's cinnamon rolls throughout the trip, so I guess he approved of this Canadian staple?

I took this picture to send to Mark's sister but it never went through...she is always talking about Shreddies but I still don't get it! I picked up a box of frosted mini wheats for the cottage instead. Just like at home!

I cannot get over this. The milk comes in bags in Ontario. I've seen it before (individual milk came in bags for public schools in Lubbock) but never like this. They package individual liters (or litres?) of milk in plastic bags and three bags are sold in a larger bag. It's common practice to squeeze the bag to make sure there aren't any leaks before picking out a bag (kind of like checking to make sure there aren't any bad eggs in a carton). Then when you get home, you put the bag in a pitcher and snip off the corner. Seems like a lot of work to me and we felt so awkward/silly walking around in the grocery store with the bag!

Mark and I claimed our spots for the long weekend...me=hammock chair, mark=hammock.

There's lots more where those photos came from, but better quality!

Of course, I can't forget the two things I was most excited to return home to:

;)

Come back next week for more! Happy Thursday!

31 week bumpdate

(taken at 30 weeks 3 days)

We're in the thick of things now, and officially in the single digit weeks! Yikes! I go back and forth every day on whether I'm ready for labor and this new life or not. It's exciting but scary all at the same time! Baby boy is active as usual and is getting to the point where he makes me jump or hurts me with some of his swift kicks. I'm down to bi-weekly doctor's appointments now and thankfully he isn't measuring WAY big anymore. I keep having fears that he weighs something crazy like 5 pounds already and he is supposed to gain 1/2 a pound every week now. Eeks! We have an ultrasound now in 6 weeks, which will put me at 37 weeks. How crazy is it that full term is just 6 weeks from now? LOTS of things on my mind this week!

How far along:  thirty-one weeks!!!

Size of babe: a pineapple! Yikes!

Gender: Mr. Man! (name is still a secret! shhhh!) I'll show y'all part of his coming home outfit soon :)

Husband: He's got this daddy-to-be thing down! He was super helpful on our trip and was very protective over me in the airport, around town, and at the cottage. I couldn't ask for anything better!

Maternity Clothes: Definitely! I'm pretty much in tank tops all the time now. I also wore these linen pants that I ordered last week on the plane and they are pretty awesome! They have mixed reviews but they were super comfy, not see-through (I ordered the coral color) and long enough for this 5'-9" girl. The waistband isn't super tight elastic but that's kind of a win these days on this big belly. They stayed up just fine on me. Bonus: they are super light and cool for summer!

Stretch Marks: Still none on my abdomen but definitely some on my chest. I'm hoping these disappear or at least fade one day!

Loving: ice cold drinks, hot baths, sitting in his nursery, and getting his coming home outfit!!!

Loathing: Wearing clothes, getting out of bed, bending over, getting up from being seated.

Belly Button: Flat most of the time. Mark called me out when I was in my comfies at the cottage and said it was an outie but I still deny it! It was just 'bumpier' that day. ;)

Movement: Of course! Getting more painful now, too. I still can't exactly tell where he is located all the time, but sometimes I can feel his booty and I can pretty much tell the difference between feet and hands. He's having the hiccups more now, which is always fun to feel!

Symptoms: Lots of upper rib pain. We took a boat ride on Sunday and while I didn't have any pain, my stomach tensed up at one point and I'm guessing it could have been a Braxton-Hicks contraction? I'm not really sure...but it's kind of weird that we are starting to get close enough to start expecting that sort of thing!

Best Part of the Week: Pretty much Thursday-Monday last/this week was awesome. We spent countless hours engaging in TRUE relaxation and it was pure greatness. I took a ton of pictures so be sure to check back over the next several days for the recap!

Worst Part of the Week: I told Mark we need to figure out a way to fly first class from now on because that flight was TORTURE. It doesn't help that planes are getting smaller while I'm getting bigger. I'm just thankful we didn't go on vacation any later!

Missing Most: My ability to do lots of things like walk quickly, fit into a kayak, and go down slippery steps without having to move like an 80 year old. All of that happened on our vacation and it just made it all the more real!

Can't wait for: I know I was just on vacation for a week, but I'm looking forward to the upcoming 3 day weekend as well as the 4th of July! Growing up, the 4th was always a HUGE day and I'm excited to celebrate it!
